Jason Baird wins BASS Federation
Central Div HAYS, Kan. After Jason Baird brought in more than 25 pounds
of fish on day two of the BASS Federation Central Divisional
at Cedar Bluff reservoir, everyone thought he had locked up the
winner's spot everyone, that is, except Baird, himself. Friday's
final round proved him wrong.
"Today the wind blew about 40 miles
an hour and it was tough fishing," Baird said after Friday's
final weigh-in. "I got four bites and 14 pounds.
"At this lake, a 20-pound stringer
is real common, so I had to fish hard. I was still worried when
I only brought in 14 pounds."
But that 14 pounds put the Gypsum, Kansas
angler well over the top, giving him a three-day total of 61
pounds, 8 ounces, which translated into a 9-pound, 15-ounce lead
over Bob Thomsen of Lincoln, Neb., who posted a final weight
of 51-8.
This is Baird's second trip to amateur
fishing's big leagues. Federation anglers who qualify for their
state teams go on to divisional events. Each state's top-finishing
angler in divisionals qualifies for the CITGO BASS Federation
Championship. In 2001, Baird represented Kansas at the championship,
but didn't finish with one of the Federation's coveted tickets
to the CITGO Bassmaster Classic. Baird hopes that's all about
to change.
"It's awesome to be going back,"
he said. "This time I'm not going to be as nervous as I
was last time, so they'd better watch out."
Baird said he picked up all of his fish
by Carolina rigging Zoom brush hogs and lizards and fishing along
deep structure. His strategy also included two color changes:
Throwing June bug-colored baits in the morning and watermelon-colored
baits in the afternoon.
Baird will be joined at the CITGO BASS
Federation Championship by Thomsen; Danny Johnston of Windsor,
Mo., who finished with 50-7; Calvin, La.'s Cole Garrett, 47-1;
William Pippen of Crossett, Ark., 43-4; Piedmont, Okla.'s Glenn
Cunningham, 42-11; Eddie Armstrong of West Point, Miss., 34-14;
and Mike Rupard of Big Spring, Texas, 34-9.
By sanctioning over 20,000 tournaments
worldwide through its Federation of anglers, BASS is the world's
largest fishing organization. The CITGO Bassmaster Tournament
Trail is the oldest and most prestigious pro bass fishing tournament
circuit. It continues to set the standard for credibility, professionalism,
and sportsmanship as it has since 1968. BASS is a wholly owned
subsidiary of ESPN.
Sponsors of the CITGO BASS Federation Divisionals
include CITGO Petroleum Corp., Busch Beer, Chevrolet Trucks,
Yamaha Outboards, Mercury Marine, Skeeter Boats, Triton Boats,
