Pioneer lure developer and bass angler dies
Jim Zeiner, Jr. -
Tom Mann, one of the pioneers in bass fishing as it's known today died Friday, Feb. 11 at the age of 72. The well know angler and lure maker of Eufaula, Alabama developed products years ago that are still among the mainstay of anglers today.

I remember his Jelly Worms from the 70s. While Creme is credited for the introduction of plastic worms, Mann is the one that put a "scent" slant on the bait. While manufacturers today still work to develop scents that will make the baits more effective, Mann was way ahead of the curve.

My dad fished some of the early BASS tournaments during a time when Mann was developing a reputation as one of the leading bass anglers. I still have one of the programs from one of those early tournaments held on Mann's home lake, Lake Eufaula.

We still sell many of his Little George lures to anglers fishing deep structure. His Mann's 20+ and 30+ crankbaits are a mainstay in many deepwater anglers' tackle boxes.

He also left his impact on the depthfinder industry through his help in the development of affordable sonar units for anglers through Hummingbird.
