Several new regulations that take effect Jan. 1, 2008

December 13, 2007 - Printed copies of the 2008 Kansas Fishing Regulations Summary won't be available until early January, but anglers should be aware of several new regulations that take effect Jan. 1, 2008. The most welcome changes should be reduction of youth trout and paddlefish fees, as well as a reduction of the 24-hour fishing license fee. Other changes affect gigging, length and creel limits, black bass tournaments, and more. Read story

Licenses and permits good for rest of 2007, all of 2008

November 28, 2007 - Holiday bargain days begin Dec. 17 at the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP). On that date, all 2008 KDWP licenses, permits, and other issues go on sale and will be valid for the remainder of 2007 and all of 2008, adding more than two weeks to their value. This includes hunting, fishing, and park licenses and permits. In addition, park annual vehicle entrance permits are priced at the off-season value, providing even greater savings. Read story

Nov. 28, 2007 - Each year, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) raises and stocks millions of fish throughout the state, providing anglers with special opportunities to catch a wide variety of species. To monitor the health of fisheries and help anglers find the best places to fish, KDWP fisheries biologists spend the better part of each fall sampling lakes throughout the state. First rainbows, now brown trout reproduce naturally in Oklahoma's Lower Mountain Fork River

Oklahoma trout opener set for November 1

October 29, 2007 - The wait is almost over for trout anglers growing anxious for the opening of seasonal trout areas in several state waters.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation operates two year-round trout fisheries - at the Lower Mountain Fork River (LMFR) and the Lower Illinois River - but in the six other areas, including Lake Pawhuska , Robbers Cave , Blue River , Lake Watonga , Quartz Mountain and Lake Carl Etling, the season kicks off Nov. 1. Peak period of mating activity, other factors, puts deer on the move

October 27, 2007 - Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) statistics show that November is the month when the highest number of deer-vehicle collisions occur. Motorists are encouraged to be on particularly high alert about mid-month -- historically when deer-vehicle collisions are highest. The main reason there is a greater potential for deer-vehicle accidents in November is the deer mating season, called the "rut," which peaks in mid-November. Read story

October 26, 2007 - The Kansas Wildlife & Parks Commission has approved a variety of changes in fishing regulations, effective Jan. 1, 2008. At their public hearing in Colby Oct. 18th, commissioners took the following actions:

* Removed the requirement for youth 15 and younger to possess a trout permit to fish in designated trout waters and, in related action, established a daily creel limit of 2 trout for youth 15 and younger fishing in designated trout waters (unless they purchase a trout permit, which allows a daily trout creel limit of 5); Read story

Wildlife and Parks working with stakeholders to contain infestation; lake-user help essential

September 7, 2007 - The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has confirmed that zebra mussels have been found in Cheney Reservoir. During routine lake inspections, KDWP district fisheries biologist Jon Stein collected three zebra mussel adults. After the initial discovery, KDWP surveyed the lake shoreline in search of more mussels. Zebra mussels were found at many locations around the lake at very low densities. Read Story

June 16, 2007 - SHREVEPORT, La. Danny Smith, of Monterey, La., turned 47 on Friday. And he celebrated in grand style Saturday, winning the Bassmaster Central Open on the Red River.

His birthday haul? A new Triton TR20X2 boat/trailer combination powered by a 200 horsepower Mercury OptiMax engine, and $6,000 cash. 

Smith's total bag weight Saturday of 13 pounds, 15 ounces. While it wasn,t the biggest bag of the day, it was enough to give him a three-day weight of 42-6 and his first Bassmaster tournament win.

Hometown angler Marvin Ettredge, the leader at the start of the day, finished second.

Drought has plagued the area, and many lakes have been so low that boat ramps are several hundred yards from the water. However, a very wet spring is helping to reverse this trend.
