May 18, 2004 - For the first time in the rankings'
history, Mark Davis is the No. 1 angler in the world. His jump
was aided by dropping a 128th-place finish from 2 years ago. Kevin VanDam falls to No. 2 again, the lowest he's ever been
in the rankings, but he's less than a point behind. Alton Jones (3rd) and Greg Hackney (4th) don't move, although
both had Top 10 finishes at Kentucky Lake and both dropped mediocre
finishes from 2 years ago. However, Davis and VanDam won't fish
again until the Bassmaster Classic, whereas Jones and Hackney
have another chance to improve their rankings at the Lake Champlain
FLW. Also, it looks like Hackney and Jones are shoe-ins to make
the FLW Tour Championship, which (along with the Classic) will
give them another opportunity to amass points. Finally, as in
every edition of the rankings, note that there's a little lag
in movement because the rankings use a rolling 2 years of data. Skeet Reese moves up one spot to 5th, and Gerald Swindle moves
up three spots to 6th. Two terrible finishes in a row have caused Kelly Jordon to
fall five places to 7th, the lowest he's been in a while. Clark Wendlandt got his second Top 20 in a row last week,
and moves up seven places to 8th. Gary Klein falls to 9th, and Mike Surman moves up nine places
to 10th, the first time he's ever been in the Top 10. Mike Iaconelli continues to climb and has now cracked the
Top 20 in 19th. Note again that pros for whom 2004 is their second consecutive
full season will show up in the rankings at the end of June or
early July. That is after the last regular-season FLW Tour event. State Farm-BassFan World Rankings Place Prior Angler City State Points 1 5 Mark Davis Mt. VanDam reclaims lead, passing Jordan
April 7, 2004 - Thanks in large part to Kelly Jordon's
uncharacteristic 162nd-place finish at Beaver his worst finish
in the last 4 years he allows Kevin VanDam to slip past him to
regain the No. 1 slot. VanDam leads by less than a point, and
assuming that he doesn't fish the last two FLW events (he hasn't
fished any so far), Jordon will have two events before the championships
to regain the No. 1 ranking. Alton Jones is still 3rd and Greg Hackney is still 4th, but
Jones is a little further out of 2nd and Hackney is now less
than a point behind Jones. Brent Chapman moves back into the Top 10 at 8th, and
Gerald Swindle moves up one spot to 9th. Aaron Martens has climbed out of his poor performances last
year, and is now back in the Top 10 at 10th. Thanks partly to a 4th at Beaver, Clark Wendlandt moves up
8 places into 15th. Mike Surman continues to fish well, and after an 8th at Beaver
is now 19th in the world. David Dudley isn't fishing well, and after a 127th at Beaver
drops 9 places to 22nd. A 124th at Beaver helps Alvin Shaw drop 17 places to 30th. Tracy Adams, Dan Morehead and Cody Bird all had Top 20s at
Beaver, and all move up substantially. Jordon Ranked No. 1 after Bassmaster Tour
            Season
 Mar. 30, 2004 - Following are the State Farm-BassFan.com
World Rankings as updated after last week's Bassmaster Tour event
on Santee Cooper, the last event of the 2004 Bassmaster Tour
season. Notable items: > Thanks partly to Kelly Jordon's win at Santee (he also
dropped a 156th-place finish at Lake Ouachita 2 years ago), he
is back in the No. 1 slot, and has a healthy 6.4-point lead over
Kevin VanDam. > Unless VanDam fishes an FLW Tour event this year, he
has no more opportunities to improve his position until the Bassmaster
Classic since, as stated at the beginning of the tour seasons
(and again below), the new Bassmaster Elite 50 series events
won't be counted in the World Rankings this year. > Jordon is fishing the Beaver Lake FLW this week with
only 2 days of practice because his Santee win delayed him getting there. Whether this will hurt
him in the tournament, and in the rankings, remains to be seen.
On the plus side for Jordon, he has a chance to once again fish
both championships, which will help him vs. VanDam, who will
only fish the Classic this year. > Alton Jones remains in 3rd, and is les than 2 points
away from VanDam. > Greg Hackney had his third Top 10 and fourth Top 20 in
a row at Santee, and moves up one spot into 4th. He's only 1.1
points behind Jones. > Mark Davis drops one spot to 5th. > Skeet Reese remains in 6th, and Gary Klein and Tommy
Biffle switch places and are now 7th and 8th respectively. > David Dudley moves back into the Top 10 in 9th, and will
have an opportunity this week to improve his position. > Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) winner Gerald Swindle
remains the 10th-ranked angler in the world. (Reminder: Titles
mean nothing in the World Rankings. Also, no bonus points are
given for winning AOY because the finishes that went into that
season are already accounted for in the rankings.) > Dean Rojas continues to climb and is now 11th. Ditto
for Alvin Shaw, who is now 13th. > A 10th-place finish at Santee helps Aaron Martens jump
up seven slots to 14th. > Shaw Grigsby had two Top 20s in a row and is now in 18th. > Davy Hite, who has fished well this season, climbs 12
spots into 35th. He finished 19th at Santee. > Again, at this time BassFan won't include BASS's new
Elite 50 series in the world rankings. The reason is that the
E50s aren't based on strict qualifying. Technically speaking,
both tour fields also aren't based 100 percent on strict qualifying
(via points), but that's "under the table," is for
the most part equal, and in any case the vast majority of the
field qualifies based on current tour or Open/EverStart points.
By contrast, in the Elite 50s, the use of all-time winnings doesn't
reflect current performance. These are essentially "provisional"
slots which account for 40% of the field to ensure the inclusion
of fan favorites, making these more "exhibition"-type
events. BassFan will revisit the E50 decision after the current
E50 season, in large part because BASS intends to make less use
of the all-time winnings list for future E50 fields. > Because of the compressed six-event Bassmaster Tour season
this year, pros who only fish that tour won't have a chance to
help or hurt themselves in the World Rankings until this summer's
Bassmaster Classic. FLW Tour pros have fished three regular-season
events and have three more to fish, including this week's event
on Beaver Lake. Following are the State Farm-BassFan.com World Rankings as

moved vs. the previous edition of the rankings, please click
here: www.bassfan.com/rankings.asp Notable movement this time includes: > The Top 3 Kevin VanDam, Kelly Jordon and Alton Jones
don't change, nor do the margins between them change much. > Thanks largely to his win at Table Rock, Mark Davis moves
up three slots into 4th. > Tommy Biffle finished 14th at Table Rock and partly because
of that moves back into the Top 10 at 7th. > Jay Yelas is back in the Top 10 at 10th, and Zell Rowland
falls to 11th. > John Murray finished 11th at Table Rock and that helped
jump him back into the Top 15, at 13th. > Gerald Swindle, who has been fishing well, moves up four
slots and is now 15th. The same can be said for Edwin Evers,
who is now 16th. > David Walker and Kenyon Hill are back in the Top 25 at
23rd and 25th, respectively. > Todd Auten, who finished 5th at Table Rock, climbs 12
slots to 32nd, and Mike Iaconelli continues his climb up the
rankings and is now 34th. Note: The criterion for getting ranked is now more strict.
Anglers must have fished 11 tour-level events basically two full

months). Even with roughly 350 competitors across two tours,
fewer than 200 anglers meet this criterion, which is why the
list currently does not go to 200. Jordon Still Ranked No. 1
 Feb. 19, 2004 - Following are the State Farm-BassFan
World Rankings as updated after last week's FLW Tour event at
the Atchafalaya Basin. Notable items: > Texas' Kelly Jordon remains No. 1. Even though he finished
70th at Atchafalaya, he dropped a 108th from 2 years ago at the
Wheeler FLW. Kevin VanDam, still 2nd, didn't fish last week.
He doesn't get penalized for that in the rankings formula, but
he dropped a 16th at Wheeler and didn't add anything. Jordon's
lead is now 4.5 points over VanDam, up from 1.5 points after
the last tour event. > Alton Jones, ranked 3rd, finished 85th at the Atchafalaya
Basin, which didn't help him any. Before he was 3 1/2 points
out of the No. 1 slot, but is now 7.5 out. He also was 12 points
ahead of Gary Klein, ranked 4th, but now has an 8-point margin
over Klein still a big cushion. > Skeet Reese, who didn't fish last week, somehow jumps
from 9th into 5th, and after him are now Greg Hackney David Dudley
and Jay Yelas. Roughly 1.6 points separate the latter three anglers. > Dean Rojas is back in the Top 25 at 23rd. > Atchafalaya winner Sam Swett rises from 178th to 156th. Tour event, Kelly Jordon becomes the first angler to knock Kevin
VanDam out of the No. 1 slot in the State Farm-BassFan World
Rankings. VanDam, a perennial fishing powerhouse, had been the No. 1
angler in the world since the World Rankings debuted, in August
2001. He started out the 2004 season 12 points ahead of Jordon,
but then things heated up: > VanDam sat out the Okeechobee FLW, and Jordon finished
            a respectable 33rd. But 3rd-ranked Alton Jones finished 12th
at that event and edged into the No. 2 spot by a few thousandths
of a point. > At the next event, the Harris Chain Bassmaster, VanDam
had his worst finish in recent memory (101st), while Jones finished
7th and Jordon finished 19th. After that event, both Jones and
Jordon were within striking distance of VanDam. > At last week's Smith Lake Bassmaster, Jordon finished
15th, VanDam finished 48th and Jones finished 130th. They are
now 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the world. > Since the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings use a 2-year
rolling average, all of these anglers were also dropping events
as they were adding new finishes. That played in to their points
and subsequent rank, the details of which are too much to explain
here. The question is how long Jordon can hang on to the No. 1 slot.
He and Jones are fishing this week at the Atchafalaya Basin FLW,
but VanDam is not. Also note that since the beginning of the 2003 season, Jordon
has finished in the Top 20 nine times in 20 events. That's an
amazing 45 percent of the time. Also, as an indicator of how
he's been fishing, last year he and VanDam were the only two-tour
pros who qualified for both tour championships via the tours. Other notable movement: > Thanks in part to a 7th-place finish at Smith Lake, Louisiana's
Greg Hackney cracks the Top 10 for the first time, in 7th. > Tommy Biffle is back in the Top 10 at 8th. > Skeet Reese also cracks the Top 10, in 9th. > Zell Rowland drops to 10th. World Rankings
VanDam Starts in No. 1 In World for 2004
Kevin VanDam still is the No. 1-ranked angler in the world
following last week's Okeechobee FLW. But in part because he
didn't fish that event, his 12-point margin over the No. 2 angler
in the world, now Alton Jones, has shrunk by a third, to a little
less than 8 points. But VanDam is fishing the Harris Chain Bassmaster
this week, as are all the anglers in the Top 10 in the world
except David Dudley. Jones retakes the 2nd slot from Kelly Jordon, but not by much
(0.006 points) partly due to his 12th-place finish at Okeechobee
vs. Jordon's 33rd. David Dudley continues to fish well, and moves up three spots
to 5th in the world after finishing 3rd at Okeechobee. Some jumping around in the rankings occurs as a result of
Bassmaster-only or two-tour pros dropping finishes from late
2001, back when the first part of the Bassmaster Tour season
was in the fall. Some examples: > Zell Rowland jumps up from 11th to 5th in the world even
though he didn't fish last week (he doesn't fish the FLW Tour)
because he had two semi-bad finishes in late 2001. Losing those
two finishes pops him up in the rankings, and indicates how strong
his performance was last year. > Jay Yelas drops to 9th because he lost two Top 10 finishes:
one at the end of 2001 (9th at the Red River Bassmaster) and
one at the beginning of 2002 (3rd at the Okeechobee FLW). He
also didn't fish last week, so this week will be the first chance
he has at replacing one of those Top 10s. > Tim Horton drops to 11th in part because he lost his
win at Lake Toho in December 2001. > Larry Nixon (29th) stays exactly where he was even though
he finished 9th at Okeechobee, in part because he dropped a 2nd-place
finish at the December 2001 Toho Bassmaster. Other notable items: > Mike Wurm (18th) continues to drop because he didn't
fish as well at the end of 2003 vs. 2002. > Dean Rojas (32nd) drops 7 spots even though he finished
high at Okeechobee (7th), in large part because of a lack of
any championship points in 2003. > Bear in mind that with the exception of 1st and 2nd,
the point spread is very tight within the rankings so small losses
or gains can result in movements of several places. > Also bear in mind that some movement is delayed because
this is a 2-year ranking (if it was more than 2 years, movement
would be delayed even more). > As always, angler movement will likely become less pronounced
as the tour seasons progress. interested in 1) Tiger VanDam -- Bass fishing doesn't
have a Tiger Woods? Think again. Kevin VanDam starts the season
ranked No. 1 in the world, according to the State Farm-BassFan
World Rankings. This is the third straight season he's started
off ranked No. 1. In fact, he's been the No. 1-ranked angler
in the world since the rankings debuted in August 2001. The closest
he came to being knocked out of the top slot was midway through
last season, by Texas' Alton Jones (now ranked third). Will anyone
catch him this year? (Start-of-season rankings listed below.) 2) Better Footing -- This season the pros
start off on much more solid mental ground. At the end of last
year, BASS's Busch patch controversy and "early spring-loaded"
tour schedule caused negative emotional reactions among some
pros, and some two-tour pros for the first time felt like they
were forced to choose to fish one tour or the other. In 2004
the Busch patch is gone (replaced by Citgo), though BASS's heavily
early-spring tour schedule remains. Fewer pros than ever are
fishing both tours, and they are splitting mostly along boat
company lines. For example, Triton- and Skeeter-sponsored pros
fish BASS, and Ranger- and Stratos-sponsored pros fish FLW. 3) Three new items of note this year: > BASS is having a go at a NASCAR-like
series called the Elite 50s. It's NASCAR-like in that the fields
are smaller, fan-favorites are retained (using the BASS all-time
money list), and the big money is reserved for end-of-season
points standings instead of the tournaments. BASS also is using
a points system based on NASCAR's soon-to-be-defunct point system.
One item to note there is that under the new BASS system, the
winner of a tournament could earn fewer points than a runner-up
-- which is one reason NASCAR is changing its system. > Interestingly, FLW is going in a completely
different direction. It has increased the size of its tour field
to 200 boats (from 175) while BASS has gone back to 150 on its
tour and 50 in the E50s. FLW's emphasis seems to be on participation
while BASS's seems to be on elevating the top tier of the sport. > The Top Gun Championship will for
the first time put the best from both tours on the water at once
to determine who is the best in the world. The 25-man field will
be chosen from the Top 25-ranked anglers in the State Farm-BassFan
World Rankings at the end of the tour seasons, meaning after
the championships. Top Gun will take place on an as-yet unnamed
body of water over Aug. 27-29, 2004. 4) Stormy Weather -- Last year pros on
both tours fished almost every event in cloudy, rainy and windy
conditions. Almost every event also was during pre-spawn conditions.
Will this season be different? 5) Flipping Again? -- Power (faster, fewer-bite,
bigger-fish) techniques like flipping always dominate on the
tours, and last year was no exception. What will the conditions
favor this year? If you or your readers missed it, here's a quick
breakdown of the "winningest" techniques from the 2003
            tour seasons: > Flipping/pitching soft-plastics played
a part in 24 percent of tour wins this year, and 19 percent of
2nd- to 5th-place finishes. > Add in jigs and those percentages
rise to 32 percent and 31 percent. > Spinnerbaits, the technique that probably
benefited most from the lousy weather, figured in 16 percent
of wins and 17 percent of high finishes. > Crankbaits also helped in 16 percent
of the wins, but were a factor in just 8 percent of anglers who
placed 2nd through 5th. Still, crankbaits were the most consistent
factor in high finishes (see Table II below). > Senko-type baits helped in 11 percent
            of the wins and 9 percent of high finishes. Table: Best Techniques By Type Technique Win Place Flip 24% 19% Spinnerbait 16% 17% Crankbait 16% 8% Senko 11% 9% Jig 8% 12% Buzzbait 8% 3% Lizard 5% 2% Carolina Rig 3% 4% Lipless 3% 4% Wacky Worm 3% 3% Topwater 3% 2% Paddletail 3% -- Worm -- 5% Dropshot -- 3% Fluke -- 3% Finesse Worm -- 2% Jerkbait -- 2% Sight-Fish -- 2% Jig-Worm -- 1% Swimbait -- 1% 2004
