KP Kirkpatrick Takes First Place at Big Hill Resevoir

November 15, 2009 - From Kansas Division 58 on November 14, 2009, KP Kirkpatrick, active duty airman stationed at McConnell AFB is one step closer to the ABA National Championship with a 1st Place win and $484 in the American Fishing Tour bass tournament held on Big Hill Reservoir this past weekend. Kirkpatrick’s five bass limit weighed in at 11.88lbs, anchored with Big Bass of the tournament, a 4.88lb largemouth. Second place went to Coffeyville, KS angler, Jim Milburn with a weight of 11.69lbs; third place was Bryan Fahler of Independence, KS with a weight of 10.63lbs. Read Story

November 14, 2009 - More than three months away from the 2010 Bassmaster Classic, the full field of 51 anglers was finalized Saturday with Darrell West of Drasco , Ark. , winning the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship Operated by American Bass Anglers and scoring the final Classic berth.  Also determined Saturday were two Classic berths from the Bassmaster Central Open circuit. November 6, 2009 - MORGAN CITY, La. – The first day of competition at the final 2009 Bassmaster Central Open was easy for Mark Smith of West Monroe, La., as the pro easily culled up on one stretch of water Thursday on Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Basin. October 29, 2009 - TAVARES, Fla. – Don Hogue of Pasco, Wash., was consistent enough to barely edge out Randy Phillips of Oxford, Mass., by just seven ounces for the Day 2 lead at the Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship presented by Yamaha Outboards and Skeeter Boats on the Harris Chain of Lakes.  Hogue took the lead on the strength of Thursday’s 13-pound, 11-ounce limit building his two-day total to 24-9. Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin Delays Trout Stocking
First stocking scheduled for Oct. 19, four days after season opener

Oct. 14, 2009 - PRATT —
The Kansas trout season begins Oct. 15 and runs through April 15. Most trout waters will be stocked on that date, but Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin, originally scheduled for stocking on the opening day of trout season, won't be stocking until Monday, Oct. 19, provided water turnover is complete and water quality is suitable. Other waters with delayed stocking plans include Smoky Gardens south of Goodland, which is dry, and Sand Sage Bison Range Pond in Garden City, which is presently too low for stocking. The South Solomon River above Webster Reservoir won't be stocked until sometime after the first of the year. Read Story

Wilson Reservoir latest Zebra Mussel victim
Farthest west spread of destructive species to date

PRATT —
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has confirmed the presence of zebra mussels in Wilson Reservoir, 55 miles west of Salina in Russell County. The owner of Marine Specialty in Wilson was working on a boat from Wilson Reservoir when he noticed zebra mussels on the boat hull. He quickly notified KDWP and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) officials about his discovery. KDWP fisheries biologist Tommie Berger soon discovered live zebra mussels in Wilson Reservoir, and marina staff found them attached to other boats at the lake. Read Story

Anglers set to tackle trout Oct. 15

PRATT — The Kansas trout season begins Oct. 15 and runs through April 15. During this season, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) stocks rainbow trout in designated waters throughout the state. Some waters stocked with trout require a $12.50 trout permit for all anglers 16 or older, whether they are fishing for trout or not (Type 1 Waters). Other waters require a trout permit only for anglers fishing for or possessing trout (Type 2 Waters). Read Story

August 16, 2009 - From Division 66 in central Kansas August 16, 2009 Gale Brown is one step closer to the ABA National Championship with a 1st place win and $390 in the American Fishing Tour bass tournament held on El Dorado Lake this past weekend. Gale’s 4 bass limit weighed in at 8.25 pounds. Second place went to Larry Gawith with a weight of 7.66 pounds, and third place was Jim Vaught with a weight of 4.00 pounds. August 14, 2009 - SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Consumed with some positive mojo, Chad Griffin of Cresson, Texas, a Bassmaster Elite Series rookie, capitalized on consistency Friday on a New York fishery that he had never seen until this week, jumping 12 places to the lead with a two-day total of 33 pounds, 11 ounces, good enough for a little more than a 1-pound advantage over Elite veteran Bernie Schultz of Gainesville, Fla. August 13, 2009 - Randy Howell has treated Oneida Lake much like a complex puzzle. Saturday's Central Pro-Am on Truman Lake was won by Matt Jones, of Spokane Missouri.  His five fish weighed 17.88 pounds.   Matt once again showed that no matter what lake or what time of the year, he is a threat to win.  Kenny Williams provided Matt with a Skeeter ZX 225 to fish with, since Matt’s boat is broke.  Second place was won by Steve Ortiz, of Lawrence Kansas.  Read Story

Kansas' first floatline fishing season begins July 15
Eight reservoirs targeted for pilot program; special permit required

June 24, 2009 - PRATT -- Last October, the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission approved a pilot project to allow floatline fishing at eight reservoirs beginning this summer. Anglers will be allowed to use floatlines only during daylight hours from July 15 through Sept. 15 at eight Kansas reservoirs: Hillsdale, Council Grove, Tuttle Creek, Kanopolis, John Redmond, Toronto, Wilson, and Pomona. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks staff recommended the addition of this fishing method to provide more angling opportunities on reservoirs with untapped channel catfish populations. The team had a huge bass of 8.84lbs to kick the 5 fish limit up over 25 lbs with a total weight of 25.45 lbs to take home $1024 1st place money and $204 for 1st Big Bass. The team was using stick baits on the main lake. They were happy to be catching fish all day long. They concentrated on channel swings and points to find their fish. Once rivers rise, paddlefish enter the state in search of spawning areas, when water temperatures approach 60 degrees. This usually occurs shortly before or after the March 15 opener, when paddlefish may be taken on the Neosho River below the Chetopa and Burlington city dams, on the Marais des Cygnes River below Osawatomie Dam to Old KC Road, and on the Browning Oxbow Lake of the Missouri River. SHAWNEE STATE FISHING LAKE DAM RENOVATION TO BEGIN MARCH 1

Lake will be partially drained; summer vegetative growth in lake bed should improve fish habitat

February 26, 2009 - During the summer of 2009, visitors to Shawnee State Fishing Lake (8 miles north and 4 miles west of Topeka) will notice a big change. Beginning March 1, local contractors will begin renovating the dam, which is approximately 50 years old and has recently begun to show deterioration. Although the dam is not in imminent risk of failure, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is rehabilitating the dam to provide many more years of outdoor recreation opportunity. Just 1 12 years later, Reese fulfilled the dream, winning the 2009 Bassmaster Classic Sunday on the Red River with 54 pounds, 13 ounces, barely beating 2003 Bassmaster Classic winner Mike Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J., who had 54 pounds, 2 ounces after a Day Three haul of 20 pounds, 3 ounces. Jan. 28 , 2009 - A new project at Meade Fish Hatchery, near Meade State Park, holds the promise of bass that may start growing earlier and get larger in their first year than bass hatched with traditional hatchery methods, or those hatched in the wild. Typically, bass in hatchery ponds or in the wild spawn in mid-June, too late to take advantage of young gizzard shad, a primary prey species for bass. Jan. 15, 2009 - The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced the opening of a new rental cabin at Atchison State Fishing Lake (3 12 miles north and 2 miles west of Atchison). The cabin is available year-round. With a double bed, a double fold out futon, a single futon, and a Murphy bed, the air conditioned and heated cabin will sleep six. Renters must provide their own bedding, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A hot shower, complete kitchen, refrigerator, stovetop, and microwave will make a stay as comfortable as home. Read Story

KDWP TO STOCK TROUT IN RIVER ABOVE WEBSTER RESERVOIR

After five dry years, river flow returns to levels that support stocking

Jan. 14, 2009 - In 2000, above average river flows allowed the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) to experiment with seasonal rainbow trout stocking in the South Fork of the Solomon River above Webster Reservoir. Habitat was enhanced in three zones between the upper end of the reservoir and the Damar Blacktop (2 Road) to help hold trout in place, and fish were released in these locations in February and March of that year. Fort Hays State University Biology Department staff and students assisted with an environmental assessment of this pilot project. Results were favorable, and trout were again stocked in the river in the winter and spring of 2001 and 2002. Read Story
