March 31, 2004 - Milford - My
dad fished Milford damn-north end. Caught one keeper 19 incher,
saw some other guys catch 4 keepers. Using soft jigs and rapalas. March 30, 2004 - El Dorado -Caught a couple males off the West end of the damn, both keepers. They were about 25 yards out, so they are moving in. Caught them just before dark last Thursday the 25th. The weather has turned them off, but a couple good nites and we should be back in business. Anyone else having any luck at Eldorado yet on Walleyes? I have heard stories, but you just never know. March 29, 2004 - Cow Creek -Been fishing on the Cow creek couple of times with my son. We caught one carp and a turtle. Getting catfish fever hope they are bitting soon. Smitty March 29, 2004 - Cedar Bluff - Fished for walleye at Cedar Bluff on Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The wind was blowing hard from the south and I was fishing at the north end of the dam. Started out with a 3" chartreuse twister tail and caught a 16" walleye and 1 smallmouth during the first 30 minutes. As soon as it got dark I switched to a #11 black and silver floating rapala. I was casting parallel to the dam no farther than 20 feet out from the bank. A medium retrieve seemed to work the best and kept the rapala just barely bouncing off the rocks. Caught 6 more walleye all over 15", but only one was over the required 18 inches (all males). They seemed to shut off about 8:30. Good Luck! Nathan March 29, 2004 - Kingman County SFL - Buddy and I went to Kingman Lake from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm today. Great weather - little wind. Caught 8 large mouth bass - from 2lb 8 oz to 6 lbs. Had a lot of fun. Troy. March 28, 2004 - El Dorado - Took
kids and their significant others and wife to el dorado saturday.
other than hurricane force winds (hey this is kansas, right),
a pleasnant day. we tried trolling and jigging the dam for 3
hours for walleye, nothing. we beached the boat and walked the
dam and son caught 5 nice smallmouth bass (1 1/2 pounds average),
so at least he didn't get skunked like the rest of us. wish i
had a better walleye report, but couldn't find them. randy Caught 1 - 10 lb carp on shrimp & 1 - 8 inch channel catfish
on green worms. 25 Mar 2004 Caught 2 nice medium size Wipers on yellow maribou Road_Runner
jig tight lines March 24, 2004 - Kanapolis - Went
out this evening fished for about 2 hrs.Caught 7 large white
bass.Lost twice as many.Try the face of the dam when you find
them stay on them they are concentrated. March 20, 2004 - Eureka Lake - Caught
some nice crappie trolling main lake points. Fish were suspended
in about 8 to 10 feet of water. I was using a sinking thin fin
crank bait. Tried some bass fishing in the early afternoon. Slow
going, but did get a few keepers in shallow water on spinnerbaits.
A cold front rolled through Saturday morning. We also were dealing
with 20 to 30 mph wind. Still a nice day on the water. Jeff March 19, 2004 - Woodson - Took the new boat out for a spin. My dad wanted to try Woodson and I knew it was a good fishing lake. Little info though is they did drain the lake in 1992 because I guess it became over populated with rough fish. So there may not be many monsters, but I know there are many bass to catch. The water temp was ranging from 48-51. Definately not temps for bass. I was using a jerk bait, but the winds were really bad. Plenty of clouds, which can be good, but not when you need that sun to warm the water up. The lake is high as well. One of the roads is underwater a bit. The boat was the main priority to get it used for the first time. I finally found where the fish were located, but I wasn't up for facing the wind and fishing where they were. They were in the main body of the lake by the dam. Sitting right in the thermocline which was at around 32 feet. My dad caught on little fish... We pulled it out and I never seen it before... I got the hook out and it popped up its fin... It's a baby walleye! hehe. Once it's fin poppep up I knew what it was. And that was the only fish caught. Another month fishing should be great if the vegetation gets growing. March 19, 2004 - Cheney - anyone
wishing to respond. mr. "D" cove. north of wichita
point. i have never herd of any reports of fish in that area.
it has deep water in it. anyone ever do any good fishing in that
area? any humps adjacent to deep water? i have never fished there. Caught limit of 5 rainbows using Strike King Bisty Pond Minnow
Crankbait March 15, 2004 - Chase County - chase
county farm ponds 3/13/04Nasty weather on saturday but still
managed 37 decent crappie and around 25 March 15, 2004 - Walleye question - Who can I ask about how walleye spawn on the lakes. Is it the males come up first, then the females? Or females come up and then the males? Kerrytrebbe@aol.com or Chelim@bfsnapa.com March 12, 2004 - Marion - Went to Marion last night and had two walleye up to the rocks, but they managed to make the release fairly easy. My starting point for fishing the rip-rap has always been around 42 degrees. And from that point on, I'll fish the rocks with rogues and Jr. thudersticks and have great success until they are in full-fledged spawning mode. I've been walleye fishing for 12 years now, and every year seems to be the same. When I start hearing the fish splash in inches of water, its pretty much time to wait another few weeks and get the boat out. If I have ever caught them past that point, they are usually snagged by accident. It makes sense to me that the best time is when the fish are FEEDING, not SPAWNING. When these fish are in the spawning mood, they generally have no intention on eating until they are done with there job. So in retrospect, the best time to go for me is now, not next week when there is 42,000 people standing side by side watching these magnificent fish swim back and forth through their legs and around their baits and splash all night long. Don't get me wrong, you can still get an occasional male to hit off of reaction, but it may take 200 casts to do so. Also, for me the best times are just befor sunset to a couple of hours after, and then the same around sunrise. Keep in mind, a friend of mine was fishing at Wilson the night the state record was caught. He said the fish were in full spawn mode and hardly anyone had caught a fish all night. All anyone heard was the spashing of males and females. Then, all of the sudden, a lot of splashing and yelling occured just down from him. He swears to this day that the fish was snagged in the back. I sure hope that was not the case, but I would'nt doubt it. GOOD LUCK! March 10, 2004 - Watershed Butler
County - caught several nice bass and one crappie.
One bass was about 4 and a half and they all were in less than
2 feet of water. All the bass were caught on a bitsy bug. Heard
a second hand report of 7 walleye being caught on the dam at
eldorado last night. Any one out there have any walleye reports
yet? we should all use this site to our advantage to help keep
each other informed of what's going on at area lakes!travis
tswift@farmersagent.com Arrived approx 1040 hrs CST @ Outlet Park. 73 March 8, 2004 - Derby area lake Went out to one of the Fish and Game stocked lakes down at Derby this afternoon..The weather was unbelievable and the water is starting to settle down and warm up...The catfish were biting on Sunnys and I took home two nice ones for the skillet...There are still plenty of fish in the local stocked lakes before the first stocking at the end of this month...Bring on the spring.... March 3, 2004 - El Dorado response - we have been catching a few trout at tuttle creek seep stream but it has In reply to El Dorado Walleye, This Spring should be Awesome. Fishing should pickup soon. Find any point, and anchor your boat in 4' to 7' and use Jig head tipped with a nice fresh nightcrawler. A little wave action helps tremendously. Sit the jig and crawler combo on the bottom and tighten the line, so the waves pick up the jig off the bottom, then drop it back down. This method has proven to be DEADLY for Spring Walleye on El Dorado lake. Last year we caught unbelieveable amounts of fish till the water reached 70 degrees. Once this happens they tend to go deeper during the day, usually 10 to 15', and really feed more in mornings and evenings. Then Trolling becomes the best method. Hope I helped answer some questions. mikeelliott@cox.net MIKE E. March 3, 2004 - Tuttle Creek Trout
- we have been catching a few trout at tuttle creek
seep stream but it has really been slow this week 2/29/04. they
were mostly caught on minnows & power baits i got a couple
on corn February 29, 2004 - Reply to Feb. 16 questions - Don't know much about Wolf Creek, but La Cyne is a good bass fishing lake alot of big ones are caught there i'm told. I have fished it several times since it's close. Water is always warm and no special permits are neede unless you put in at the Marina Ramp (which is best) a few bucks a time. I am not a big bass fisherman but have tried and caught alot of 1 to 4 lb range. Now is the time as the summer comes around water temps can reach 90 plus degrees. My opinion for catching numbers of bass excluding whites you will catch more than Milford altough it is smaller than Council Grove. Hope this helps. February 22, 2004 - Watershed Lake SC Kansas - couldn't take it any longer. just had to go fishing so me and a buddy loaded up our 2 man saturday afternoon and went. when we got there it was still about 1/4 covered with ice but, we slid the boat in anyway. I am really glad that we did because we caught a couple of nice crappie and one bass about 3 pounds that tried to jump twice but, couldn't get himself out of the water. Really felt good and I couldn't help laugh thinking about people walking around the sports boat and travel show talking about catching fish while we were doing it. Will be out again very soon!!! Travis tswift@farmersagent.com February 16, 2004 - Wolf Creek / LyCygne questions - Has anyone out there fished wolf creek, or lycene lately? I don't know much about them, and don't even know if they are open. I have recently found a love for bass fishing after switching from a walleye fanatic. Just wanting to do some bass fishing since our lake (milford) is frozen. I have heard wolf creek and lycene, are both great places for a trophy. Never caught a giant largemouth, but have caught a few nice smallies. If anyone has any recent info on these lakes, any posted info would greatly be appreciated. Thank you all, R.J February 16, 2004 - Heads up for Cheney - WENT TO CABELA'S IN K.C. OVER THE WEEKEND. PICKED UP UP WHAT I THINK IS NEW OUT ON THE MARKET. RAPALA DT. CRANK BAIT DEEP DIVER. GOT SEVERAL DT 16, (16'). HAVE NOT TRIED IT BUT LOOKS LIKE A ITEM WHAT WILL WORK WELL TROLLING DEEP FOR CHENEY THIS SUMMER.(BOUNCING OFF THE BOTTOM). MANY COLORS TO CHOSE FROM. THIS I THINK REPLACES THE RISTO RAP THAT'S WORKED EXTREMELY WELL OUT AT CHENEY. NOT CHEEP. $5.96 EACH. IT'S BEEN ADVERTISED ON T.V. THIS WINTER. YOU MIGHT CHECK IT OUT. MARK. Editor's note: Zeiner's Angler Supply
has the Risto Rap for $3.99 normally, but until Feb. 29 or when
they run out they are on sale for $2.99 as part of the sale to
coincide with the Sports, Boat and Travel Show. February 13, 2004 - Kansas Angler in North Carolina - Hi All, I was fortunate enough to get invited to a video shoot in North Carolina, We fished 2 days with the first day producing 70 14# to 17 # Blue Fish with only 4 stripers caught the first day, the largest 24# . The second day the wind shifted and grew to 33 MPH with 8 to 15 foot seas, pretty rough for this old Kansas Boy. We still managed 50 stripers with 32# being the largest, releasing 40 stripers over 20#. Our Captain
Shannon Miller of the Blood Vessel http://www.bloodvesselsportfishing.com/
was very disappointed with the catch but we had a ball, our Captain
did a fantastic job keeping us on the fish despite the rough
seas! The next day he took a charter out on calm seas and caught
over 120 stripers with 35# as the largest which is a slightly
above average day for one of his trips. February 12, 2004 - Cheney - The C.L.A. (Cheney lake assoc.) had their annual dinner last week with good attendance along with an excellent smoked rib dinner provide by C.L.A. held at longhorn supper club Tyler and 54. guest speaker was the Cheney lake park manager. he gave a very good report on the parks projects completed and upcoming. there still planning on a new boat dock jetty to replace the old one at the marina. won't happen this year but maybe next year. one thing came to mind that each angler needs to keep in mind at Cheney. the white bass population is almost zero due to the white perch. so this summer if you catch a bass under 21" and you want to keep it make sure its not a wiper. more than likely it will be a wiper. please throw it back for they can grow. please get familiar with the difference. check out our booth at the Kansas sport boat and travel show feb. 18 - 22. see about becoming a member and check out info on the rented cabins (air conditioned) at Cheney lake. thanks. C.L.A. member. January 27, 2004 - Fish Stories -
like to share a few memories during these cold times
when you can't get out and fish. a few years ago I used to fish
fall river, (lake), 80 miles east of Wichita, many times during
the summer from my boat. my folks have a nice cabin there that
makes it convenience to spend the weekends. it's my favorite
lake for big white bass. I can't find any bigger in Kansas. took
me a while to find my hot spots, but each time I hit them if
the water/weather is right I catch them almost each time. most
are 15" long but have landed many 17". catch them trolling
and jig fishing. best when it's hot in July and august, (mornings)
off drop offs and one area were there's rocks not far from the
middle of the lake. twice I was trolling and using a deep diver
bomber and caught two, yes two big whites on one bomber. I have
caught flat heads, biggest 40lbs. trolling. once in a while a
F-16 fighter from Vance air force base, Oklahoma, will fly by.
once so low he turned his fighter slightly sideways and I could
see him and he gave me a salute. that's was neat. have not been
back for a year. why? I live so close to Cheney lake and I'm
hooked on those big wipers and stripers and big walleye. so why
go anywhere else. so, anyone wondering about fall river there
is BIG white bass, and a lot of them, in that lake and it's one
of the most beautiful lakes in Kansas. one other thing. I had
a big fish on and he broke my line. five days later fishing in
the same area I caught this huge white and he had a bomber in
this mouth and up 18" on the same line was a yellow crappie
jig 1/8 oz. that's the same lure/set up I use. yes, that was
the one that broke my line five days ago. true story. if anyone
had any neat stories I would like to hear them. January 23, 2004 - Marion - Went to Broken Bridge to do some crappie fishing. All I caught was White Bass. I caught about 20 Whites but they were really small. I caught them on a 1/160z blue and silver cast master, and a 1/160z red and blue tub jig. There are alot of white in the river, but they are really small. The crappie fishing has been slow. I talked to a fisherman and he said the crappie fishing on the resivour has been preatty good, so has the wipers, even a some walleye being caught on the brush piles. Todd Northcottonwood Outfitters January 21, 2004 - Fees for 2004
- Made my annual stop by the Great Plains Nature Center
for all my licenses for this year. all fees are up from last
year. $54.50 for fish a annual park permit/license. thank goodness
I don't need a annual camping permit. on top of that fuels going
up. all equipment needed, replacement batteries for boat, boat
registration/property tax that are outranges in Kansas. don't
blame owners going to OLK.. to register there boat. Cheney lake
association fee, (club). I'll still do it. just keep putting
those fish in the lake from the hatchery. I love to fish. mark.
January 12, 2004 - Heated dock answer The one I know of and I have been to is Marion county lake. Due note that it's more for crappie and they have a bunch of brushpiles down in the water. It drops over twenty feet deep and holds some big crappie if you can get them to bite. It's heated and very large. The cost is three bucks to use it. Dominic January 12, 2004 - Cheney - WOULD
LIKE TO EXPRESS MY SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF THE ELDERLY MEN
THAT LOST THEIR LIVES LAST SAT. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ICE FISH
AT CHENEY LAKE AND FELL THRU THE ICE AND DROWNED. I TOO HAVE
BEEN OUT THERE ICE FISHING BACK IN 2000-2001 AND CAUGHT A TREMENDOUS
AMOUNT OF FISH AND REMEMBER THE GOOD MEMORIES OF THOSE TRIPS.
I'M NOT A EXPERT ICE FISHERMAN BUT A MIN. OF 4 TO 5" OF
ICE IS REQUIRED BEFORE I VENTURE OUT ON IT AND DON'T GO OUT ON
THE ICE UNLESS I SEE MANY ALREADY OUT ON IT. LIKE I SAID ICE
FISHING IS VERY ENJOYABLE IF THERE'S NOT A LOT OF WIND. YOU CAN
CATCH A TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF FISH AT THE RIGHT TIME AND LOCATION.
ONE LOCATION I LIKE BEST IS NORTHWEST OF THE ISLAND 1/8 A MILE
OR SO IN 16 - 18' OF WATER FISHING OFF THE BOTTOM A FOOT OR SO.
YOU HAVE TO WALK OUT ON THE ICE 1/2 MILE OR SO TO GET THERE.
IT GETS COLD OUT THERE. January 10, 2004 - Looking for heated docks - Would like some information on any heated docs - specifically, how much it costs to fish from them, hours of operation, and location. Any information would be greatly appriciated as my wife and I are going stir crazy not being able to get out and do some fishing! - Tom January 9, 2004 - Response to question on water treatment at Cheney - I'm no water treatment specialist, but I read that they are adding ozone treatment. This basically oxidizes and breaks down organic particles. It is done in the water treatment facility and will have no effect on the lake or the fish. I requested (in round numbers) 30 million walleye fry, 100,000 wiper fingerlings, and 10,000 wiper intermediates (about 7 inches). It's only been a year since we started the white perch management plan, but there has been very little change in the white perch population. If anything, it may be even more entrenched. We have good numbers of large walleye, with almost no small walleye to replace them. The bright spot is that there are good numbers of wipers 12 to 15" coming on. If anything is going to put a dent in white perch numbers, it will have to be the wipers. Gordon Schneider, Fisheries Biologist, Kansas Dept.of Wildlife and Parks January 8, 2004 - Question on Water
Treatment on Cheney - question on the new water treatment
cheney lake is going to install. i read the article in the wichita
eagle a few weeks ago of the equipment they're going to install
to prevent the water from smelling and tasting funny. can any
biologist (cheney) explain how the process will be done? any
effects to the water inside the lake before it leaves the dam?
any effects to the fish? also, what's the request for stocking
for 2004 for walleye, wipers? any fall (2003) report of netting
results of said fish? Source: Kansas Anglers like you. Send us a report. |
