Stream - Arrived Outlet parking lot approx 11:30 AM
w/ 1 other vehicle in the parking lot (8 vehicles w/ trailers
visible @ the launching site on the lake), whose occupants were
fishing the outlet area. 2 other folks showed up and tried their
hand for about 45 minutes with no results. December 16, 2004 - El Dorado - Mike Cook - Four Lake
Guides - Can't seem to get the writing juices flowing.
Sorry. I fishing E.D. thursday and couldn't get the walleye to
bite. The crappie were real slow also but there was a great bite
on big white bass. Look for them in 15-25 feet of water in the
upper end of the lake. Slab spoon with a jig tied a foot or so
above it has been doing the trick for me. December 13, 2004 - El Dorado - Mike Cook - Four Lake Guides - The fishing is really hot right now for big walleye. Lots of white bass and the crappie fishing is starting to pick up. December 11, 2004 - Wilson - DECEMBER 11, 2004. WOKE UP TO 26 DEGREES OUTSIDE WITH NO WIND. GOT THE BOAT READ. WHAT A CRISP MORNING. HEAVY FROST ON THE GRASS. THE SMELL OF CEDAR COMING OUT OF MY CHIMMY STOVE ON TOP OF THE HOUSE. NOTHING BUT STARS ABOVE. CAN'T WAIT TO HIT THE LAKE. MY BUDDY SHOWED UP AND WE HEADED OUT. GOT TO THE LAKE AT 10 AM. AFTER SEEING SOME LEFT OVER SNOW STILL IN THE DITCHES ALONG I-70. THE LAKE LOOKED GOOD WITH VERY LITTLE WIND. TEMP. UP TO 34 DEGREES. TALKED TO ANOTHER FISHERMAN PUTTING HIS BOAT IN ASKING OURSELFS WHAT THE HECK ARE WE DOING HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF DEC. SURPRISLING AROUND 15 BOATS WERE ON THE LAKE MOST ALL JIG FISHING OFF THE SIDE OF THERE BOATS. WE PUT THE DOWNRIGGER OUT AND TRIED OUR LUCK. WE DRANK OUR COFFEE AND ATE OUR LUNCH AND HAD THE MOST WONDERFULL DAY FISHING. THE WEATHER WAS REALY NICE. ENDED UP GETTING UP TO 58 DEGREES
WHEN WE GOT OFF THE LAKE. WE HAD ONE 5 LB. STRIPER AND A 15.5
INCH WALLEYE TO OUR CATCH. THE WALLEYE HAD EGGS IN HER. TALKED
TO ANOTHER FISHERMAN HE HAD THREE NICE WALLEYE TO HIS CATCH.
WE CLEANED OUR FISH ON THE DOCK WITH SEA GULLS FLYING ABOUT YELLING
AT US LOOKING FOR A BITE TO EAT. I HAD SOME CORN CHIPS LEFT FROM
OUR LUNCH SO I THREW THEM INTO THE WATER AND HERE THEY CAME EATING
ALL. MUST HAVE BEEN 50 OF THEM. WHEN WE LEFT THE LAKE AT 4PM.
I LOOKED BACK AT THE LAKE AND TOLD MYSELF. I FEEL LIKE THE MOST
LUCKY PERSON TO BE ABLE TO SPEND A DAY AT THE LAKE THIS TIME
OF THE YEAR. MARK. December 3, 2004 - Marion - Went fishing at broken at Marion Resivour and the fishing is getting good. Caught about 20 nice white bass and 5 small crappie on a 1/4 oz white and red tube jig. The whites were about 1/2 pound and bigger. Two weeks ago went wiper fishing at Marion and caught some really nice wipers up to 6 pounds. We caught them in 23 foot of water close to the dam. We ended up with 17 wipers and 7 white bass in a hour and half. We caught them on a 1/2 oz white bucktail jig and 1/2 oz whte and pink road runners. TB December 3, 2004 - Question - Noted brief post by "jer" touting 2 lb line/waxworms for crappie. Is this in anticipation of ice fishing, or a method he uses right now.I'd like to hear more specifics. Jer?? Tim S November 29, 2004 - Tip - time to get 2lb line with ultralite rod and use waxworms and spikes to catch big bluegill and crappie fishin pal jer November 26, 2004 - Cheney - Haven't been to the lake for a few weeks, but was wondering if anyone has been catching any perch? I know most people will wrinkle their nose at this, but the last few years, perch are about all I fish for anymore. A blast to catch on light tackle and probably the best eating fish in the lake. Thanks. November 21, 2004 - Marion County
Lake - caught 40 big bluegill nov.8 at marion co heated
dock on grasshoppers and worms good eating jer November 19, 2004 - Kanopolis Seep
Stream & Outlet - Weather Channel conditions 1008
hrs for Salina: 11/13/04 November 4, 2004 - Cold weather fishing - Years ago, we use to drift spoons and jigs. Now, I don't fish Cheney that much. I do spend a lot of time out there on the ice. Last year, was by far the worst year for ice fishing. The very first day I went ice fishing, I caught 2 stripers close to 20lbs each within 15 minutes of each other. The next 7 or 8 days I went ice fishing resulted in no fish. Little discouraging, however, I don't think much was going on as I visited Marion and Kanopolis and observed same results. This year I plan on spending some time at Wilson and trying for one of them monsters. Don't get me wrong, I still plan on going to Cheney (because it's only 30 minutes away), as I'm hoping last year was a fluke. Jeff November 2, 2004 - Cheney - I have always wondered about November, December fishing at Cheney. One time I tried it I think around thanksgiving three years ago. I checked the forecast and headed out with a buddy. The forecast was light winds and very cold. Got out to Cheney and it was windy. 20+ m.h.p. we tried to troll with the downriggers and it was so windy the lake water got on our poles and froze them up. A terrible trip. So, I have tried with no luck. With the report of very poor ice fishing last winter at Cheney I dough I will even ice fish anymore. Back in 2000-2001, (winter), ice fishing was excellent at Cheney. For the last three years in November and early December I head out to Wilson lake for stripers. Try to make 2 to 3 trips during this time. I have not had much luck even at Wilson. Might come up with 2 to 3 stripers in the 9 lbs. range. I have even been out to Wilson were it was so cold my windshield would ice up till noon with lake water. Even though our catches are small at Wilson if you can catch a day in winter with the high in the lower 60 with light winds it can be a very enjoyable day at the lake. Sorry I don't have any productive winter fishing reports. If you don't mind the distance hire a guide at Beaver Lake. They have great catches in the winter. Wilson Lake has a guide that fishes in the winter. Might try him. Mark. November 1, 2004 - Kingman County - anyone try pike fishing at kingman state lake there are 40"+ pike in the lake and is the best in the state, live minnows seem to work well on warm fall afternoons, any more info is greatly appreciated jer October 30, 2004 - Milford Lake Outlet - Hello there! October 28, 2004 - Cold weather fishing at Cheney - We know Cheney is full of white bass/wipers/stripers. We also know that these species bite very well through the ice. Has anyone figured out the cold water (non-ice, open water) pattern for catching these fish? Seems like there should be great fishing out there in December before it actually ices up. Anybody have successes/failures to report? Tim S. October 26, 2004 - Milford Outlet
- Missed the prime time per the solunar table &
the barometric pressure was dropping but I went anyway to see
if I could catch some of the white bass & channel catfish
that the KDWP were reporting active due to the increased release. October 25, 2004 - Cold weather fishing
- Well I have been fishing a smaller body of water,
but many lakes will follow the same rule. Right now the temps
are perfect for bass going into a feeding mood, but they are
not roaming for the most part. I have been finding about five
to ten bass holding in structure mainly trees for me. I have
been killing them on tubes that I have a darter jig head on.
I'm using a green four inch tube and ran out and started using
the lake fork tube claw and that has been working even better.
They are killing them on the fall. I have even caught crappie
on the tube and the crappie have been holding shallow. October 22, 2004 - Cold Weather fishing - During the cold weather season, I would recommend taking advantage of the trout stocking program by the KDWP. In Wichita, try Vic's Lake or Slough Creek in Sedgwick County Park or KDOT East Lake. See the following website for more locations and schedule: http://www.zeiners.com/4fishingnews/041020troutstock2004.html Absolutely anyone fishing for trout in these waters during season must have a valid trout stamp. Slough Creek is flies only, read the postings along the creek for a definition. I fished all three locations on opening day and caught 2 sizeable largemouth bass, 4 baby bass, 1 bluegill and 0 rainbow trout using ultra light tackle with Mepps spin flies and thunderbug. Don't give up on these spinners though, I have limited out in past years using the same. If anyone has any trout fishing tips, please post. Dean B. October 22, 2004 - Lakeview Park

September 25, 2004 - Thanks from in Iraq - I just wanted to write in and say thanks to all of you who give your reports to this site. I am in the military and currently stationed in Iraq. Being able to read about your successes is a welcome distraction from everything that is going on here. Trust me it has meant a lot to me. So thanks to all, and don't stop writing in. MR Editor's note - responses to this will be posted on the Commentaries From Kansas Anglers Page October 20, 2004 - Marion County Lake - anyone try fishing for bluegill at marion co. lake when it gets cold thry r the best eating use 2lb test line w ultra light rod and use spikes or wax worms for bait marion co.lake has lots of big bluegill at the heated dock some near 1lb. there fun to catch with ultralight rod since the crappie seem not to bite as well there. i started going after big bluegill when it gets colder . there the best tasting fish anglers please share more info jer October 19, 2004 - Pratt County Lake - caught

October 9, 2004 - Cheney - Here is
a picture I just got back, of the 25lb Striper I had mounted
this year caught at Cheney in July. It really is a beautiful
mount. We caught several close to this size in the 20+ range,
and (1) 28 lb fish, I wish I would have had done. Mike E.
October 6, 2004 - Cheney - I finally
took the time to visit Kansas and fish for the wipers you guys
talk about all the time. I've been dreaming about it for a couple
of years....Arrived at Thunderbird Marina Sun noon (9/30), met
my cousin and got settled in, made it on the water by 4. The
gulls weren't doin' anything so we trolled 15-20' with no luck.
We cast some rock points and had some fun with smallmouth on
ultralites. Mon. eve we saw some boats on the west side of the
main lake southwest of the south hump and joined them. My graph October 2, 2004 - Cheney - Caught these Saturday, including a 23 inch wiper, a 17 inch white bass, and a bunch of smaller wipers and white bass trolling a thunder stick and a shad rap. Weather was perfect and the fishing was excellent. September 30, 2004 - Cheney - went out in the afternoon. way too windy. Should have went weds. when there was very little wind. No fish. Did talk to one person catching lots of catfish north of sailboat cove. Also, was told weds. was excellent at thorny point all day on wipers. Like I said I was a day late. Mark. September 28, 2004 - Marion City
Lake - 9-28, had to get out after a rough day in the
office. Picked up my wife on the way and fished Marion City Lake
for a couple of hours. Another gorgeous evening to be out. Only
boat on the water! We caught and released more than a dozen bass,
Kentucky and LM. A few hit a buzzbait but most came on either
a green-pmkn tube or 4" worm around the brush piles and
rock jetties. This is one of my favorite times to fish. Don't
give up on fishing September 25, 2004 - Coffey County Lake - 9-25, fished for smallmouth at Coffey County lake. Beautiful day, little to no wind. Caught a number of smallmouth on shallow to medium diving crankbait early. Then found some success with a craw colored football jig with a smoke-red trailer. Water on south end of lake was 75 - 80 degrees. September 28, 2004 - Cheney - THOUGHT
I WOULD ADD THIS FOR ANGLERS CAN DO A COMPAIRISON FROM 2001 TO
2004 ON CATCHES. WHAT AFFECT THE WHITE PEARCH HAS ON THE LAKE
FOR ME. I'M NOT A FISH BIOLOGIST BUT HERE IS MY FACTS ON MY CATCHES.
BACK IN 2001 WHEN THE WALLEYE AT CHENEY LAKE COULD HAVE BEEN
RATED THE BEST IN THE NATION ON CATCHES. I CAME UP WITH 197 WALLEYE,
42 WIPERS, 10 STRIPERS. COMPAIRED TO 2004, 107 WIPERS, 47 STRIPERS,
13 WALLEYE. HOPE YOU FIND THIS INTERSTING. SOME OF THE FACTS
ARE GOOD AND BAD. I PERSONLY ENJOY THE WIPER/STRIPER CATCHES
OVER THE WALLEYE. BUT THE WALLEYE ARE MUCH MORE TASTER ON THE
DINNER TABLE FOR ME THAN THE BASS. FROM WHAT I'M EXPERENCING.
THE WIPER PROGRAM FISH AND GAME HAVE IN PLACE TO COMBAT THE PEARCH
PROBLEM I'M HAVING GREAT SUCCESS CATCHING LOTS OF WIPERS EACH
YEAR. THE POPULATION OF PEARCH? I'LL LEAVE THAT UP TO DEBATE.
I'M NOT COMPLANING. SO, IT SOUNDS LIKE WALLEYE AND MAYBE WHITE
BASS ARE BEING DEVISTATED AT THE LAKE DO TO THE PEARCH FOR REPRODUCTION.
IS ANYONE SEENG THE SAME TREND? MARK. September 22, 2004 - Answer to Mark's
Question - In answer to Marks question How Many fish
did I catch this year? I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA! haha. I totally
agree with you about things being totally different at Cheney
this year! Last year I caught Stipers WAY more that Wipers! Probably
10 Stripers to every 2 Wipers. This year its been pretty even.
June and July I know we caught close to 100 Stripers and I know
even more Wipers. Largest Striper was 28 lbs. Largest Wiper was
16 lbs. Many Wipers in the 10 to 12 lb range. and Most Stripers
around 14 to 17 lbs, with several to 24 lbs.
HEY MIKE E. HOW DID YOU DO THIS SEASON? September 16, 2004 - Farm Pond near Wellsville
- Farm Pond near Wellsville, KS Tuesday night - Bass
very active and hitting plastic worms.
September
16, 2004 - Farm Pond - This is my Bait Crew , My Girls
Lexie , Linzie and Lacie all Love to help me catch Perch. They
have become quite the Anglers, catching Perch, Bullheads and
an occasional Bass from our favorite bait pond. Owe a lot to
them for keeping the bait well full so I can pursue Monster Catfish
this summer. September 14, 2004 - Ottawa - Decided
to give Ottawa a try being that Republican River is once more
becoming non-existant. Fished the 1st pier into the lake just
north of the dam near the empty feeder. North side of pier, caught
2 largemouth bass using Strike King Pond Minnow, but neither
were close to keepable size, but September 11, 2004 - Farm Pond - September 7, 2004 - Kirwin - This
is my largest Channel to date , Weighed 30 lbs on the nose. Caught
and released on Rod n Reel using live Perch. Between my Brother
and I , this makes 3 - 30 lb plus Channels caught out of Kirwin
this year.
Brian from Mac September 2, 2004 - Cheney - SEPTEMBER
01, 2004. HIT THE LAKE AT 3:30PM. TILL 8PM. FISHING
WAS EXCELLENT. THE LAST THREE WEEKS I'M ONLY FINDING THEM IN
ONE AREA, OUT OF 5 HOT SPOTS, NEXT TO A DROP OFF ON THE WESTSIDE.
THE AREA IS ONLY THE SIZE OF A SMALL HOUSE. CAUGHT 10 WIPERS
ALL SIZES UP TO 8 LBS. THREE STRIPERS 3-6 LBS. CAME UP WITH ONE
HUGE 7 LB. WALLEYE EAST OF REFUGE POINT ABOUT MILE. THERE
IS A HUMP OUT THERE. TRIED TO REMOVE A HUSKEY JERK FROM A WIPERS
MOUTH AND HE TOOK TO SHAKING AND ONE OF THE TREBLE HOOKS GOT
ME IN THE THUMB. ALL THE WAY IN. TALK ABOUT PAIN. TRIED TO REMOVE
IT AND IT WOULD NOT COME OUT. 1 HR. TO A EMERGENCY ROOM. NO WAY.
SO I GRABED THE HOOK AND GAVE IT HECK. STILL WOULD NOT COME OUT.
TOOK SOME NEDDLE NOSE PLIERS AND GRAB IT AND IT CAME OUT. SO
DID THE BLOOD. REALY PAINFULL. PUT A BAND AID ON IT. ANYWAY,
WENT BACK FISHING AND AFTER THAT NEXT WIPER THE PAIN WENT AWAY.
DID HAVE SEVEAL DOUBLES ON ONE POLE AND ONCE BOTH DOWNRIGGERS
WENT DOWN AT ONCE. WATER TEMP. IS BACK UP TO 80 DEGREES. AND
THE WEATHER LAST NIGHT WAS PERFECT. LIGHT SOUTH WINDS AND NOT
TOO HOT. DID CLEAN MY CATCH. BEFORE I LEFT THE LAKE AT
DARK I GRABED A DR. PEPPER OUT OF THE COOLER TO DRINK AND I FELT
THIS SPRAY ON MY FACE. THE CAN HAD A PIN HOLE IN IT AND WAS SPRAYING
ALL OVER MY FACE. WHAT A NIGHT. HOOK IN THE THUMB. DR. PEPPER
SPRAYING IN MY FACE. I'LL GRILL THE FISH TONIGHT. ONE HUGE WIPER
WILL ALMOST FEED MY FAMILY OF FIVE. WON'T BE LONG AND THE COOL/COLD
FRONTS WILL BE COMING IN TWO THREE TIMES A WEEK. YOU KNOW WHAT
THAT MEANS. THIS YEAR I HAVE FOUND FOUR BRAND NEW BUOYS FLOATING
WITH NO ONE IN EYE SITE. I'V PICKED THEM UP AND I LEAVE THEM
ON THE DOCK WHEN I LEAVE THE PARK. THEY HAVE ALL BEEN IN MY WAY
TROLLING. MARK. Source: Kansas Anglers like you. Send us a report. |
