IT'S TIME TO ORGANIZE A LOCAL
FISHING DERBY FOR KIDS
Qualifying Organizations Receive A Free
Derby Kit
Tulsa,Okla - Jan 4, 2005 TULSA, Okla. - Wanted: Adult
volunteers to sponsor local fishing events for kids. That's the
word from the people behind the very successful Wal-Mart Kids
All American Fishing Derby which has launched a program to make
2005 the most successful ever in its 19-year history. In 2004,
more than 330,000 kids from 6 to 16 fished in over 1,800 kids
fishing events. They were held in all 50 states and six foreign
countries. Obviously, to put on that many local events, the national
organizers need help. That's where adult volunteers come in.
Civic groups, fishing clubs, churches, parks departments and
other recognized organizations provide volunteers to get the
word out, sign up the kids, supervise the event, award the prizes,
and generally have a great time.
Hooked on Fishing International, the Tulsa, Okla.
organization that oversees the national program for Wal-Mart,
has prepared its biggest and best free fishing derby kit to qualifying
groups. There is still time for interested groups to beat the
deadline for becoming part of the 2005 program. Simply go to
the Web site - www.kids-fishing.com -- and click on the "Organize
a derby" tab. The application requests the location and
date of the event, plus the expected number of young anglers.
The fishing derby kit contains virtually everything needed to
organize and conduct a kids fishing event, including a how-to
handbook, event promotion materials, fishing items, and other
goodies for each young angler, and even prizes for the winners.
Most events are half-day in length, beginning in the morning
and ending at noon, with snacks or food items being served.
Throughout its history, the Kids All-American Fishing
Derby program has received strong support from state fish and
game departments, the U. S. Forest Service, parks and recreation
departments, chambers of commerce, YMCAs, fishing clubs, scouting
groups, and civic and service organizations such as the Optimists,
Lions, Kiwanis, and Elks.

KIDS WIN BASSMASTER CASTINGKIDS
NATIONAL TITLES
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.,-July 26, 2002-While the
52 B.A.S.S. pros competed on Lay Lake for the sport's world title,
ten aspiring young anglers went casting for championship titles
of their own at the BASSMASTERS CastingKids National Finals,
presented by Chevy Trucks and CITGO.
The two champions are Benjamin Tawney, 10, of Parkton,
N.C., and Rex Rodanas, 12, of Bedford, N.H. Tawney scored a total
of 130 points to win the 7-10 age division while Rodanas scored
140 points to gain the 11-14 championship.
Tawney, a two-time North Carolina state CastingKids
champion, was in his element at the championship held concurrently
with the CITGO BASSMASTERS Classic. He wants to one day become
a professional angler and compete alongside the pros when he
grows up.
Rodanas has already reached pro status in the CastingKids
program. In 1998, he lost the championship title in a tie-breaking
cast-off when he was 8 years old. Since 1997, he has won six
New Hampshire state championships and qualified five times for
the national semifinals.
"It feels good to finally win it," he
said. "I really worked hard to get here and am glad my sister
was here to see me win it. It's really neat that we were the
first two siblings to make it this far in the B.A.S.S. organization."
Rodanas' sister Vanessa competed in the 7-10 age
division and placed fifth with a score of 90 points. Both siblings
are spirited competitors in the sport of fencing as well.
The champions in each division earned $5,000 scholarship
awards for their achievements. Overall, $20,000 in academic scholarship
funds was awarded at the national championship.
Taking second place in the 7-10 division was Arkansas'
Sara Paxton with a score of 120 points. Jeffrey Reeder of Washington
State and Minnesota's Joshua Erickson both scored 110 points
but Reeder won the tie breaker to place third.
Former CastkingKids national champion C.J. Shirey
of Alabama scored 130 points to earn second place in the 11-14
division. After three finalists tied with 120 points, Gregory
Gutierrez Jr. of California took third. Kody McCollam, another
former national champion, was fourth. Missouri's Chris Smreker
was fifth.
CastingKids competitions divide youngsters into
two age groups, 7-10 and
11-14. The events, which are set up similar to the NFL's Pass,
Punt and Kick
contests, have the youngsters compete in the fundamentals of
flipping,
pitching and casting a hookless lure into a bull's-eye-style
target. Points
are awarded based on distance from the center. Each competitor
is given two
chances to flip, pitch and cast, with the highest score from
each attempt
added together for a total score. The highest possible total
is 150 points.
CastingKids began in 1991 as a means of promoting
fishing to youths. Since then, the B.A.S.S. program has reached
more than 1 million kids and awarded $2 million in scholarships
to the winners.
The Classic is much more than just the crowning
event of the CITGO BASSMASTER Tournament Trail. Classic Week
is the annual celebration of the sport of bass fishing that attracts
B.A.S.S. members and other fishing fans from across the country,
who come to meet their fishing heroes, attend the weigh-ins and
participate in youth and other fan-friendly events.
The launch venue for the event will be Paradise
Point Marina. The exciting CITGO BASSMASTERS Classic weigh-in
show and the Classic Outdoor Show will take place in the Birmingham-Jefferson
Civic Center. With the exception of the launch site, all of the
venues for the event are located in close proximity.
ESPN and ESPN2 will offer same-day coverage of
the Classic during the last three days of its Bass Week programs,
which will air from 5-6 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2 July 22-24; 4-6 p.m.
on ESPN2 July 25 and 26; and 7-11:30 a.m. on ESPN2 and 7-8 p.m.
on ESPN July 27.
By sanctioning over 20,000 tournaments worldwide
through its B.A.S.S. Federation, B.A.S.S. is the world's largest
fishing organization. The CITGO BASSMASTER Tournament Trail is
the oldest and most prestigious pro bass fishing tournament circuit.
It continues to set the standard for credibility, professionalism,
and sportsmanship after more than three decades. B.A.S.S. is
a wholly owned subsidiary of ESPN.

Youth Team Kansas Takes 4th
in Delaware
Kansas angler takes National title
July 18, 2002 - The Kansas Youth Team fished the Nanticoke
tidal river
in Laurel Delaware. The river was almost high tide when
they blasted off at 7 am, it still had about a foot and half
to
go, then by the time the 3 o'clock weigh in it had fallen 4ft.
Most of the kids took the information they had from the adults
and what they had learned in one day of pre-fishing (current
was the
key).
All six anglers caught fish, Sam Randles, Chelsey McDonald, Cassidy
Cox
accounted for 8 fish but none of them were big enough to weigh.
Ryan Smith, Will Skucius, James Hoover brought in the teams 11
keepers
for a team weight of 16.75.
There was only 5 limits brought in, Ryan and Will had 2 of the
5
Will Skucius of Sterling Ks. 5 fish limit weighed 5.96 and was
good for
5th. Ryan Smith of Maize Ks. 5 fish limit weighed 9.01 and crowned
Jr.
Bassmaster National Champion.
He beat out a youth from Vermont who had 8.99.
The team event top 5 went like this:
Team Ontario / Canada took top honors with 21.01
Team Delaware took 2nd with 20.32
Team New Jersey took 3rd with 17.06
Team Kansas took 4th with 16.75
Team Ohio took 5th with 14.08
The Team all got plaques for 4th place, the kids really put it
together
themselves since none of the youths fish with a boater from their
own state. They were at the mercy of a youth from another state
and a boater from another state.
