Waterfowl numbers |
Duck numbers have increased the past few weeks,
to about 30,000, mostly mallards and pintails. Widgeon, shoveler
and redheads are also present. Most geese are using The Nature
Conservancy. Goose numbers have been varying tremendously the
past several weeks from 50,000 to 100,000, about 45% snow's,
35% white-fronts and 25% Canada's. |

Pool 1A- 66"; Pool 1B and 1C- 39";
Pools 2, 3A, 3B and 4 have about 21 inches and Pool 4B has about
16". Pool 5 dry in preparation for dike repairs.. |
Hunting conditions |
The Wildlife Area is completely thawed. |
Expected hunting success |
Goose hunters averaged 0.6 geese per hunter
the first week of January, with Pool 2 showing the highest success
rate, hunter numbers have dropped to near zero in recent weeks.
For the season so far, goose hunters are averaging 1.06 geese
per hunter. The most successful week for geese was December 8-14
when hunters averaged 3.36 geese per hunter. For the regular
duck season, hunters averaged 2.2 ducks per hunter with the opening
week having the best success at 3.3 ducks per hunter. |
Comments |
For the 2008-09 waterfowl season, Pool 4B will
be closed to motorized watercraft. During the 2009 Light Goose
Conservation Order, (following the close of the regular 2008-09
goose season February 15), use of motorized watercraft will not
be permitted on the Wildlife Area. Roads on the wildlife
area are good, Township roads to the area can be muddy and rutted
following rains or melting snow. |

lot. Instructions are posted. Only non-toxic shot is allowed
on Isabel Wetland Wildlife Area for all species. |
