in jon boat on Satchel creek Saturday. Crappie was very slow.
Caught 4 all day. The only great thing about the day was that
the largest crappie went 15 inches. Very Nice! Went up on the
Walnut Sunday and the fishing was about the same (slow). Did
catch a pig (16 inch crappie). Nice to see the crappie getting
larger at ElDorado again.

March 14, 2007 - Question
on Clark Fish-n-Ranch of Kingman - Can anyone tell
me if Clark Fish-n-Ranch of Kingman is still in operation? They
once offered fee fishing for catfish and bass in "shady
spring-fed lakes and ponds". They were 5 1/2 miles west
of Kingman on US 54. The number I had for them is no longer in
service (620-532-2013). I was hoping to take my daughters there
this spring/summer. Thanks.

March 10, 2007 - Tuttle
Creek - March 5th - March 10th. No matter how long
you been fishing there is something new to learn each year. I've
been fishing Tuttle Creek for catfish since 1970 and the first
fishing after winter when the ice gets off the lake is the flats
where the water is warm and the shad kill provides some good
feeding. The fish all have light brown stomachs from laying around
all winter and as the water temp increases another year begins
at least that's what I've thought through all these years.
When 2007 arrives its the first year in a long
time that we receive large amounts of water from the north due
to snow melts. The first week in March I hit the flats and catch
some nice fish but not large numbers. Water is 40 degrees on
the flats. The second week of March provides some nice warm days
and very low wind. Water coming down the river is 37 degrees
and 2000 inflow. Too cold to fish the current is what I've always
thought, no so this year! They were in the river and in great
numbers and eating like hogs. Not big fish but averaged 2 to
4 lbs. Couldn't get any more food in there bellies and fat. Had
to use # 1 hook because they bit very light. Caught 30 to 35
fish each day, I've never caught numbers like that fishing the
flats. For most of us that think we have it figured out, better
think again.
Water stopping coming in on Saturday so back to
the flats. The bait of the day is fresh shad. without it you
won't catch the numbers but shad guts from the bait shop will
catch you some nice stringers. With the water temp in the low
40's it all begins now. Tuttle Creek will shine this year with
some large numbers of large channels and Milford will see some
Blue Cat over 60 lbs. RKH

Wednesday evening along the creek channel and caught 5 white

the biggest being 22 inches. Only males were caught and they
weren't even close to spawning yet due to the hardness of the
sperm sacks. Though the building of a T-storm interupted my wading
with claps of thunder and lightning strikes it wasn't long till
it moved on and I was able to get back into the water. Chartreuse

March 5, 2007 - Farm Ponds
- Took my dad and brother out fishing last wed. Whether
was perfect, but I knew the water would be very chilly. Tried
our farm pond we have fished for twenty years and couldn't get
anything. I think the fish haven't recovered from the rainy chilly
weahter we had. The pond was very muddy too. Even his small pond
that has tons of small bass didn't produce a bite. We went to
a bigger farm pond about 40 acres and tried it as well. It wasn't
as murky, but couldn't find the fish. The carp were jumping all
around though. Another fisherman was there and said it had nice
sized fish in there, but he had nothing either and he scaled
the whole lake with his chest waders. Going to try next week...
might even take my boat out as well. Hopefully I will have a
better report.

Ice fishing is pretty good since the lake is completely froze

February 7, 2007 - Answer
to Ice fishing for walleye question -
I share your same concern. I've sent numerous emails
to Kansas Wildlife and Parks and Nebraska Wildlife and Parks
asking about good places to catch walleyes through the ice and
they are just as curious as we are. The Nebraska folks said they
just seem to go away in the winter. I personally believe the
walleye are biting somewhere on something but haven't figured
it out though. A friend of mine use to catch them on minnows
at Cheney back when I was catching whites, wipers and stripers
a 4 or 5 years ago on kastmasters and little cleos. I'm really
concerned about the fisheries at Cheney because of the white
perch. It's just weird on how we can have such great success
and then nothing. It's not from a lack of trying. Since I live
20 minutes from the lake, I will venture out and I will cut 100
holes a day over a 2 mile stretch with nothing to show for it.
I will fish 4 to 12 of water looking for them. Honestly, Cheney
has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Last year I went to Glen Elder and caught crappie
which was nice.
I just got back from Lake Oahe in South Dakota
and had a good time catching walleyes through the ice. We caught
our limit everyday (4 fish per person) of 18"-22" fish.
I was catching them on rod and reels and tip ups. What seem to
be hot was a little cleo tipped with a live minnow.
Unfortunately, our truck, 2 4-wheelers and all
of our fishing gear was stolen in Council Bluffs Iowa on the
way back so I haven't fished in Kansas yet. However, I just received
my shipment from Cabelas. I will venture out this weekend. I
typically don't use live bait but am considering it just because
it does seem to pull walleyes through the ice. It's just something
I personally haven't tried in Kansas.
Good luck fishing,
Postman

I guess to answer my own quetion I decided to try the fishing
myself at Toronto. The ice
was about 5inches thick and thicker in some spots. Found a few
crappie in deeper water up in the Walnut did not make it to the
Verdigris. They averaged about a pound to a pound and a half.
Moved closer to the main lake and found some White bass. Caught
some on a white jig and some on spoons. Niether species wanted
to hit the baits aggresively. But all in all was a wonderful
adventure. Ended up with 8 crappie and 12 whites. If anyone else
has input would like to here from you.
February 25, 2007 - tuttle
creek res. - outlet area/rocky ford -
Crappie -
Slow catch rate. Fish are not of great size except for the occasional
one or two you may get over a period of time. Fish are being
take from the outlet area at random depths on small plastic lures,
and the feather style crappie jigs. Colors of lure vary, but,
pink/white, along with variations of yellow/white/red seem to
be working as well, but fishing is slow.
Walleye -
Fish are being taken at the outlet area on the common worm/jighead
combo as well as 3" plastice lures with jigheads. Colors
that have taken fish have been red, pink, and white. Fishing
is slow here as well. Expect to spend several hours to make your
catches.
White Bass -
Slow catch rate. Fish are being caught at the outlet area/rocky
ford on small plastic lures in various colors. Yellow, White,
Pink, and Bright Combos seem to be working.
Saugeye -
Have yet to catch one, or see one being landed. No report.
Channel-
Landed one while fishing for crappie. Have not seen fish being
caught. Slow.
**OUTLET OVERVIEW**
There has been outflow changes over the past month wich most
surely will affect the fishing. The weather goes from 60 and
sunny to freezing rain to cloudy to sunny. We all know that weather
is a direct influence to our catch rates, and the weather doesnt
seem to want to cooperate at this time of the year. The fish
do not seem to be aggresive and the catch rates are slow. Hits
are soft with the occasional hard hit. Lets hope the rain becomes
more stable, the weather and water temps heat up, and the fishing
becomes more active. As of right now though, anglers need to
expect a long day at the river.
February 22, 2007 - Question
on finding shad in Perry and Clinton - I struggle
finding shad thoughout the year. Summer in August is obvious,
their everywhere. Usually they are a fair size. Where are the
good sized shad in the spring (pre-spawn), early summer and late
fall? I mainly fish Clinton and Perry. I have the most difficutly
on Clinton but Perry is a struggle also. I can sometimes find
3-5" shad in the weeds along the banks but that does not
always hold true. Can they be netted deep? I see schools of what
I assume are shad 15 to 30' deep but not sure they are nettable.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

forecast it has a decent bass population and thats it. I know
this year it also supposedly had a high density rating for white
bass, but if you look back at other years fishing forecasts,

what? Has this lake had any other strong populations of fish?

about, with most hanging right around Yoder Point. Only saw a
couple fish caught. I heard, after I got off the ice that the
fish were suspended about 2-3 feet off the bottom (didn't even

February 7, 2007 - Answer
to Ice fishing for walleye question -
Wally,
I share your same concern.
Good luck fishing,
Postman
February 5, 2007 - Ice
fishing for walleye question - This probably should
be on the the commentary page, but I looked and it don't look
like much is going on there. I would like to know if anyone can
give out some info on how to catch walleye through the ice. I
know some were caught a few years back at Cheney while fishing
for stripers, probably more by accident as opposed to actually
targeting them. The walleye is caught by ice fisherman consistently
up north, so why can't that be done here, say like at El Dorado.
If someone is doing it, how about sharing the info.
Wally
February 5, 2007 - Cheney
question - Questions for ice fisherman. Is anyone
seeing in the ice dead shad? Few of them? Lots of them? How big?
Why I ask. Back in 2000, last time I went ice fishing. There
were huge numbers of dead shad in the ice. I was told this was
a good thing. Both for the shad and fish to feed on at the bottom
of lake. Intern this is excellent food for the fish, (easy pickens).
Like eating at Home Town Buffet, all you can eat. I remember
that spring and into summer, (2000-2001). Was one of my very
best years of fishing. Another comments would be apperceive.

January 31, 2007 - Answer to Coffey
County Lake Question - Coffee County Boat ramp is
just on the West side of the lake. The hot water is strait East
of the ramp so its only a short trip across the narrow lake.
The lake runs North and South for the most part. I have had great
success using Shiners along the hot water outlet just off the
rocks but try drifting along and casting cranks or plastics.
I usually just anchor and cast with a bobber and a jig and shiner
then move after 15 or so minutes of trying. Keep moving along
the rocks until you contact fish. In March the giant smallmouth
bass will be moving along the rocks for sure. You will catch
largemouth bass and whites for sure anytime during the winter.

fish are not laying around waiting for spring. There eating and
due to the warm winter there out looking for food every day.
They are not in the current (too cold) there off in the still
water next to the current. The best bait is shade. The fresh
water coming in stirs up some food and gets them moving around.
I have not caught a fish under 3 pounds, they average 3 to 7
